On March 11, 2021, our District Board of Education unanimously adopted “A Resolution Denouncing Hate Crimes and Bigotry Targeting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders'' thanks to the collaborative work of Trustee Beija Gonzalez, OGEA President Maripaz Berlin, teachers Kellee Humphrey, Kirat Sachdev, Board President Jorge Pacheco Jr., and Franklin-McKinley School District Board President Maimona Afzal Berta. We are horrified that less than a week since our Resolution passed, the mass killings in Atlanta, Georgia that took the lives of eight people, six of whom were Asian women, terrorized the nation. We stand in solidarity with the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community and condemn the attacks that occurred in Atlanta, Georgia on March 16, 2021.
Our hearts are heavy alongside our AANHPI communities that are experiencing traumatic and racist attacks in the Bay Area, across our state and around the world. For so many in the AANHPI community, worrying for the safety of yourselves and your loved ones on a daily basis is a very real experience. No one should be worried for their own safety or fear for their life ever, especially for being a member of the AANHPI community.
