Dear Hayes Community,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I hope you had a restful and relaxing summer. Things were again very busy here during the summer at Hayes as we hosted the District’s Extended School Year for Special Education. That means our secretary, Ms. Carla, and our custodians, Mr. Felipe and Mr. Vinh, worked all summer supporting the summer program and getting ready for the upcoming school year. Please give them a “thumbs up” when you see them for all their hard work!

Hayes daily schedule will remain the same this year. Our starting time is 8:00 a.m. for all students. It is very important that your children arrive on time every day! Unfortunately, we do not have supervision for students before school, so 7:45 is the earliest they may be dropped off. Students should line up outside their designated class spot and should not enter school through the front office. Starting after the second week of school we will have a walking track on the black top and music for students (and family members) who like to start the day with a little movement. The ending time for the Kindergarten day will always be at 1:20. Primary grades (1,2,3) end their day at 2:20 p.m. Upper grades (4,5,6) attend school until 2:25 p.m. For the first week of school we will be on an adjusted schedule. All students in grades 1-6 will attend from 8:00 a.m. to 1:25 p.m. Starting August 21st, each Tuesday will be an Adjusted Day with all students in grades 1-6 attending from 8:00 a.m. to 1:25 p.m.

The Hayes Staff remained fairly stable as we transitioned to the new school year. Our general education staff have switched a few places. Mr. Wong is back to teaching 1st grade and Mrs. Cameron is back to 2nd grade. Ms. Chelsey Myers, an amazing new teacher, is joining our Hayes Team teaching 2nd grade. (Mrs. Graffius has moved on to retirement after her many years of service to the Hayes Community.) Another new staff member is Mrs. Mary Anctil, who will be teaching our upper grade SDC class, and Mrs. Mindy McCarthy, who will be teaching our TK/K SDC class. Both are experienced Special Education teachers who will fit in well with our SDC Team. Coming to us from Oakridge Elementary is our new psychologist, Leana Edwards. Please welcome all our new Husky staff as you see them about the campus!

The safety of our parking lot is a number one concern. Please make sure to use the drop off lane closest to the parking lot as you go through the drive through. The lane closest to the office is reserved for our Special Education busses. Please make sure your children do not get out of your vehicle until you have passed the stanchion indicating the safe drop off zone. We have teachers and wonderful volunteer parents helping students in the parking lots and at some of the crosswalks. If you would like to join our parent traffic volunteers, please let Ms. Carla or myself know.

Our Hayes Back to School Night is Tuesday, August 29. You will be receiving more specific information shortly. Please remember this is a time for teachers to tell you about the Common Core State Standards, grade level curriculum and classroom expectations and procedures. It is not a time to have an individual conference with you about your child. Our fall goal setting conference days start September 25th and run through October 6th.

We are fortunate to have so many family members who would like to come and have lunch with their children: however as in the past, because of a tight schedule, space limitations of our cafeteria and insurance liability for younger siblings, we will need you to check your children out if you would like to have lunch with them. We will, however, have special BBQ days during your child’s lunch which you are invited to attend. We will let you know the dates of these BBQs as soon as we have them. There is information about our overall lunch program in the 1st Day White Envelope. Please make sure you read it over and apply for the free and reduced lunch program.

Hayes is a very special community and I am honored to be entrusted with the care and education of your children. All Hayes Staff are looking forward to working with and meeting the needs of all your children. One of our goals again this year is to increase the communication and partnership between school and home. We have our School Website (hayes.ogsd.net) and our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/hayeshuskies) to help support this goal. I continue to believe that school must be a center for family entertainment and community fellowship and I invite each one of you to experience a partnership with Hayes School.
