Dear Hayes Community,

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I hope you had a restful and relaxing summer. Things were again very busy here during the summer at Hayes! The District Maintenance and Operations Department came over to paint our outside building and resurface some of our outside walls. They also installed an amazing marquee! We continue to be so thankful to the supporters of the Bond Measure and all the construction related folk who worked so hard to give our school this much needed facelift!

Hayes daily schedule will remain the same this year. Our starting time is 8:00 a.m. for all students. It is very important that your children arrive on time every day! Unfortunately, we do not have supervision for students before school, so 7:45 is the earliest they may be dropped off. Students should line up outside their designated class spot and should not enter school through the front office. The ending time for the Kindergarten day will always be at 1:20. Primary grades (1,2,3) end their day at 2:20 p.m. Upper grades (4,5,6) attend school until 2:25 p.m. For the first week of school we will be on an adjusted schedule. All students in grades 1-6 will attend from 8:00 a.m. to 1:25 p.m. Starting August 22nd, each Tuesday will be an Adjusted Day with all students in grades 1-6 attending from 8:00 a.m. to 1:25 p.m.

The Hayes Staff remained fairly stable as we transitioned to the new school year. Our general education staff have switched a few places. Mr. Wong is teaching 2nd grade. Mrs. Guerra is teaching 3rd grade and Mrs. Cameron is teaching our only combination class (2/3). Mr. Levers has moved to 6th grade and we have an awesome new 5th grade teacher, Ms. Alissa Garcia, who will be Mrs. Carrion’s new teaching partner. (Mrs. Rubbo transitioned to Morgan Hill School District so she could teach at her son’s school!) Mr. Lindner will be teaching a straight 4th grade class. Another new staff member is Mr. Howard Gipstein, who will be teaching our upper grade SDC class. Again this year, Hayes will have an extra RSP teacher, Ms. Nancy Nordland, who will be working at Frost as well. There are also some changes in our front office, with Ms. Carla taking Maria’s spot as secretary. (Maria has moved to Stipe.) We are pleased to have Heather Marks as our substitute health clerk, taking Ms. Carla’s spot.

The safety of our parking lot remains to be a number one concern. Please make sure to use the drop off lane closest to the parking lot as you go through the drive through. The lane closest to the office is reserved for our Special Education busses. Please make sure your children do not get out of your vehicle until you have passed the stanchion indicating the safe drop off zone. We have teachers and wonderful volunteer parents helping students in the parking lots and at some of the crosswalks. If you would like to join our parent traffic volunteers, please let Ms. Carla or myself know.

Our Hayes Back to School Night is Tuesday, August 30th. Please remember this is a time for teachers to tell you about the Common Core State Standards, grade level curriculum and classroom expectations and procedures, and is not a time to have an individual conference with you about your child. Our fall

conference days start September 27th and run through October 7th.

We are fortunate to have so many family members who would like to come and have lunch with their children: however as in the past, because of a tight schedule, space limitations of our cafeteria and insurance liability for younger siblings, we will need you to check your children out if you would like to have lunch with them. We will, however, have special BBQ days during your child’s lunch which you are invited to attend. We will let you know the dates of these BBQs as soon as we have them. There is information about our overall lunch program in this 1st Day White Envelope. Please make sure you read it over and apply for the free and reduced lunch program.

Hayes is a very special community and I am honored to be entrusted with the care and education of your children. All Hayes Staff are looking forward to working with and meeting the needs of all your children. One of our goals again this year is to increase the communication and partnership between school and home. We have our School Website (hayes.ogsd.net) and our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/hayeshuskies) to help support this goal. I continue to believe that school must be a center for family entertainment and community fellowship and I invite each one of you to experience a partnership with Hayes School.
